Peggy Joyce Gross Hitt, 88 of Cape Girardeau, Missouri departed this life on April 29, 2021 at Chateau in Cape Girardeau.  Peggy was born August 25, 1932 in Scott City (Fornfelt), daughter of the late Jess Joseph and Mary Frances Poorman Gross.  On August 8, 1958 she was united in marriage to Herman Hitt in Benton, Missouri.  He preceded her in death on September 24, 1994.

Peggy was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Kelso, Missouri.  She graduated from Illmo Fornfelt Ancell High School in 1950. Peggy was very active in church, school and community activities.  She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and was a youth leader for many years at St. Paul Methodist Church.  Peggy was a
Girl and Boy Scout Leader, St. Francis Hospital volunteer, Commerce Better Community Club officer, served on Scott County Transit Board, and various other committees in Scott County.  She and Herman farmed and raised livestock in the Commerce area, and were awarded Farm Family of the Year (1978).

Peggy had worked at Midwest Dairy, Uregas, Missouri Propane Gas Company, and US Census in 1970 and 1980.   She retired from the Scott County Assessor’s Office in 1993.

Peggy traveled extensively, loved to read and be with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Laura (Mike) Kern; grandchildren, Anna (Jake) Wagner and Alex Kern of New Hamburg; a son, Wayne Hitt of Cape Girardeau and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and three brothers and three sisters.

Visitation will be from 9:30 – 11:00 am on Monday, May 3, 2021 at the Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City.

Family has requested the funeral service to be private.

Burial at Oakdale Cemetery in Commerce.

Family request memorials be made to charity of choice.
