Melvin attended St. Lawrence Catholic School in New Hamburg from Grades 1 through 8. He started his career by working with his father Barney doing carpenter work. He later became a self-employed carpenter, working with his sons. He had a very successful career, working from 1953-2016 and building over 150 new homes and barns, in addition to some remodel work.
He liked to slip away on weekends and go to auctions when he wasn’t working or gardening. He enjoyed buying day-old calves and bottle feeding them, along with raising hogs to butcher. Planting and caring for large gardens and a truck patch of corn and vegetables kept him busy from Spring to Fall. When he had a chance, he liked to play cards, especially Eucher, with his buddies at Schindler’s Tavern in New Hamburg on Friday nights. He also liked to play cards with family during holidays and on Sundays.
He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in New Hamburg, the St. Joseph Sodality, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Visitation will be held in the St. Lawrence Parish Center in New Hamburg on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 from 4:00 until 7:00 PM, with a prayer service at 4:00 PM and a Knights of Columbus Service at 7:00.
