Martin “Gunny Sergeant” Sanchez, 70 of Cape Girardeau, Missouri died, Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.  He was born August 3, 1950 in Sioux City, Iowa to Valentino and Nellie Castillo Sanchez.  He married Valeria Schaefer on August 31, 2012.

He was retired from the U. S. Marine Corp after serving 20 years and later worked at the Titan Corporation.  He was a member of St. Vincent Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau where he served as a Liturgist and Eucharistic Minister and volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

He is survived by his wife, Valeria Sanchez; three sons, Danny Lee, Chris Lee and Dannis Lee of San Diego, California; four daughters, Daniela Godinez of Mesa, Arizona, Sandra Sanchez of Santan Valley, Arizona, Angela Torres of McAllen, Texas and Paula Lee of Sacramento, California; a brother, Tony Castillo, Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Clara Esparza of Chicago, Ilinois and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jason Crighton; a brother, Valentino Sanchez, Jr and two sisters, Frances Carrasco and Dolores Quiroga.

Visitation will be from 9:00 – 10:30 am on Tuesday at St. Vincent Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau.

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday at the church with Revs. Rick Jones and Brian Straus as concelebrants.

Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Cape Girardeau with full military honors.

The family request memorials be sent to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
