John V Flynn

John Vernon Flynn, lovingly known as Johnny, 79, of Jackson, MO and formerly of Scott City, MO passed away on April 10, 2025 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau, MO. He was born on October 17, 1945 in Cape Girardeau to William V. and Wanda (Hartsoe) Flynn.

Johnny graduated from lllmo Scott City High School in 1963. He attended Union University in Jackson, TN and Semo University in Cape Girardeau before beginning his almost 40-year career starting as a fireman then an engineer with the Cotton Belt Railroad. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, a Veteran of the Army National Guard and a member of Lacroix Church of Cape Girardeau.

On September 25, 2004, he was united in marriage with Faith Fisher Ham of Scott City. She survives of the home.

Along with his devoted wife, survivors include his beloved son, John Scott Flynn of Atlanta, GA, two step daughters, Hope (Justin) Smith and Heather (Blake) Thomas of Cape Girardeau, and two step sons Paul Ham of Carl Junction, Mo and Derek (Lyndsey) Ham of Benton, MO; a cherished sister, Billie Lee Hillis of Poplar Bluff, MO; 13 step grandchildren that he considered his own, Zachary, Gabriel and Taylor Haynes, Hannah and Wyatt Thomas, Meredith, Maddox and Lauren Ham, Diamond, Devon (Allie), and Nathan Ham, Blake and Easton Mosby; one step great grandchild Maisyn Ham; and many nieces and nephews and dear friends.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Joe Hillis and his step grandson, Joshua Thomas.

Johnny was known for his playful spirit and love of pranks, often delighting friends and family with his outlandish stories, especially disguising his voice over the phone. His passion in life was crappie fishing and duck hunting. He was a great conversationalist and always in his element when engaging with others. He was a devoted caretaker to both of his parents. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of love, laughter and dedication will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2025 from 11:00 until 1:00 at Amick Burnett Funeral Home in Scott City. Funeral service will then be conducted at 1:00 pm with Rev. Brett Cheek officiating. Interment will follow at Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to Lacroix Church youth group, Alzheimer's Association or American Cancer Society.
