IDA MAE SEYER
Ida Mae Glasscock Seyer, Oran, MO, passed away in her home on Wednesday, February 1, 2023. Born on November 8, 1928, to Theodore Douglas and Irmina Catherine (Glaus) Glasscock, she was 94 years old.
Growing up in Oran, MO, Ida attended Guardian Angel Catholic School until eighth grade. Her connection with the Sisters at Guardian Angel, her spiritual devotion, and her desire for a community life of service and teaching led her to pursue a religious vocation with the Sisters Adorers of the Blood of Christ at Ruma in Red Bud, Illinois. Her vocation took another path due to health and family needs. Returning to Oran, she began the secular life of a teenage girl working at the International Hat Factory, joining CYC (a Catholic youth group), and eventually meeting and dating her future spouse. Her love of prayer and devotion to her faith did not lessen, but was channeled in other ways.
On September 12, 1950, she married Lawrence L. Seyer at Guardian Angel Church, Oran, MO. They were married for 71 years. Lawrence preceded her in death on January 16, 2022.
Ida Mae loved music and shared that gift with her children and church community. In addition to serving as the church organist, Ida taught piano to her 8 children and others in Oran. She explored the acoustic guitar, learned to play the dulcimer, and for several years sang with the Sweet Adelines in Cape Girardeau, MO. When she played Glenn Miller’s In the Mood on the piano, the house and front porch were rocking.
Ida Mae loved to dance, especially waltzes, but would not likely turn down a polka, swing or two step. The family living room could be transformed to a dance floor within a few beats of music.
To know the color blue is to understand the essence of Ida Mae. It symbolizes depth and stability. It reflects imagination and sensitivity. Ida was an artist - be it painting, quilting, embroidery, baking, gardening or upcycling otherwise discarded items into something innovative and purposeful.
She loved books, especially the works of Louisa May Alcott. Her interest contributed to the formation of a local book group through the Oran Branch of Riverside Regional Library.
Ida’s desire for religious life was realized when she and Dolores Mier served as founding members of the ASC Associates, a regional lay support group for the Sisters Adorers of the Blood of Christ. She celebrated 30 years as an Associate in November, 2017.
Preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Irmina, and spouse, Lawrence L. Seyer.
She is survived by three siblings Theodore E. (Judith Ellen) Glasscock, George (Diane) Glasscock, Margaret (Wayne) Niswonger, eight children Larry (Karla) Seyer, Mary (Tim) Pensel, Marty (Melinda) Seyer, Jane (Larry) Blankenship, Kevin (Melanie) Seyer, Anita Seyer, Robert (Deborah) Seyer, and Bennett Seyer, 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the charity of choice.
