Hazel Elizabeth Welter, daughter of the late Henry Russell and Audrey Elizabeth (Kern) Buckner was born on December 22, 1924 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and departed her life on Sunday, August 20, 2023 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau, Missouri at the age of 98 years.
On May 17, 1946 she married Richard William Welter in Ancell, Missouri. He preceded her in death on October 28, 1986.
Mrs. Welter graduated from May Green School and Central High School in Cape Girardeau with the class of May 1942. She served in the e US Navy WAVES 1944-1946 during World War II. She then began working at Montgomery Ward store from 1948 to 1960; at Scott County Clerks Office in July 1967 and retired February 1990 as Chief Deputy County Clerk.
She was a member of St. Augustine Church in Kelso, Missouri, Ladies Sodality, Kelso Senior Citizens, and former member of St. Annes Quilt Club and the only continuous charter member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 6407.
She is survived by one daughter: Trudy (Michael) LeGrand of Brighton, Michigan; one sister: Peggy Evans of Palm Bay, Florida; one brother: Harold (Melba) Buckner of Scott City, Missouri; two grandchildren: Richard LeGrand of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Russell LeGrand of Brighton, Michigan; two great-grandchildren: Evarista LeGrand, Calvin LeGrand; one close friend: Linda Wadlington and many nieces and nephews.
Apart from her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister Betty Lou Koechig; two brothers: James Buckner and one infant brother Chester Buckner; and two brothers-in-law: J.B. Evans and Lloyd Koechig.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at the Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City. Prayer Service will be start at 4:00 pm with the Visitation immediately following, concluding at 8:00pm. Funeral Mass will be conducted on Thursday, August 24, 2023 at the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Kelso, Missouri at 10:00 am with Rev. Tomasz Wilk officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery with full military honors.
