Barbara Harrison

Barbara A. Harrison 85 of Scott City, Missouri died Saturday, October 17, 2020 at the Chaffee Nursing Center in Chaffee, Missouri. She was born June 24, 1935 in Harrisburg, Illinois to Clinton and Hannah Bernice Warren Norman. She and Bill Harrison were married June 27, 1953 in Harrisburg.

Barbara graduated from Harrisburg Township High School in 1953. In March 1953, she met Bill. After only three dates he asked her to marry him. They were married three months later, three days after she turned 18. To their union three children were born.

After a few years in Harrisburg they moved to Metropolis, Illinois. In 1967 the family moved to Scott City, Missouri due to Bill getting a new job.

Barbara was a full-time homemaker; she and Bill always had a garden until his death in 2001. She worked very hard to make sure her family ate healthy wholesome foods. She would can vegetables from the garden, would grind her own wholewheat flour to make bread and drive to the local farms to get fresh whole milk and eggs.  She was an awesome cook and her homemade cinnamon rolls were always a big hit at the church’s bake sales. She sewed clothes for the family and many times made her own formal gowns for church social dinner and dance events. One of her passions was working in the yard. She loved to plant flowers, rose bushes, crepe myrtles, Japanese maple trees just to name a few. Barbara also played the piano and could sing. Many times, she would sing special music at church.   Music was always a big part of the family home. During her youth she was of the Baptist faith.   In 1959 she became a member of Worldwide Church of God.   She, her husband and family were very active church members. Church members were family and the Harrison’s home was always open to anyone who needed a temporary place to live.   Later in life she attended Illmo Baptist Church. She was a Biblical Scholar and studied the Bible regularly.

In past years she was involved in various organizations. She enjoyed volunteering anywhere she could. She was a volunteer at the Scott City School Library, Scott City Nutrition Center and volunteered with Southeast Hospice. In November 1998 She was awarded the Golden Angel Award for her Hospice work with nursing home residents.

She had also been a member of the Scott City Garden Club, Scott City Historical Society and the Red Hat Society. She also was a substitute for the Canasta Card Club and really enjoyed playing cards with her many friends when she was needed.

Anyone who knew Barbara very well knew she had the “gift of gab”. Her family can attest to that because most of the time we could not get a word in no matter what the topic would be. But that was ok because we loved her very much and she will forever remain in our hearts.

She is survived by three children, Bob (Mari) Harrison of Kenosha, Wisconsin, Ben Harrison of Scott City and Brenda (Randall Miller) Harrison of Jackson, Missouri; two grandchildren, Rachel and Michael Harrison of Kenosha and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bill and two older brothers, Bill and Charles Norman.

The family extends a special thank you to the Chaffee Nursing Center and Legacy Hospice for their wonderful care they provided to our dear mother.

Due to the Covid-19 virus the family has decided not to have a funeral.

A private burial will be at Lightner Cemetery in Scott City on Thursday, October 22, 2020.
