Herman J. "Chick" Vetter was born on February 26, 1920 in Bell City, MO son of Albert John Vetter and Dora Margrett Dirnberger. He passed from this life on November 19, 2013. Herman Vetter lived on the family farm in Painton, MO for the majority of his life and recently lived in the Missouri Veterans Home at Cape Girardeau, Mo. He was married to Neva Mary Frederick of Dutchtown, Mo on December 1, 1945. He was a farmer and worked for Elfrink Truck Line. He was a member of Guardian Angel Church in Oran, MO. He was a member of the Bell City School Board for three years and a member of the V.F.W, the First Special Service Force Association, and the Teamsters Union. Herman served in the First Special Service Force during World War II in the Aleutian Island, North Africa, Italy, France, Germany and Norway. His unit was associated with the Fifth U.S. Army, 36th Infantry in Italy where he participated in the battles at La Defensa and Anzio, Italy. Later his unit was assigned to the 474th infantry in Norway. His unit served in military engagements in the American Campaign, European African Middle Eastern Campaign, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign. He also earned six bronze stars. He was selected Veteran of the Month by Cape West Rotary in March 2012. His family includes a daughter, Shirley J. Owen of Poplar Bluff, MO; a son, Lon R. Vetter and wife Evelyn of Pomona, MO. His wife Neva passed away on November 19, 2009. He was also preceded in death by his children: Gary Vetter, Daniel L. Vetter and Cindy M. Poole. His eight grandchildren include Dana Wills, Lake City, TN; Joe Poole, Jackson, MO; Karen Miller, Poplar Bluff, MO; Angela Brinson, Dexter, MO; Diane Vert, Poplar Bluff, MO; Caroline Millard, Kansas City, MO; John Vetter, Tulsa, OK; and Katherine Alcancia, Springfield, MO. His eleven great grandchildren include Kenny and Karen Foltz, Courtney Dyal, Daniel and Alexis Brinson, Mark Fitts, Zane Wills, Lauren and Anna Millard, Eva and Elena Alcancia. Friends may call from 3-8PM on Sunday, November 24, 2013 at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Oran, Mo. Parish prayers will be held at 7 pm. Funeral mass will be held at 10am Monday, November 25, 2013 at Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Oran, MO with Rev. Randy Tochtrop as celebrant. Burial will follow at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfiled, Mo with full military honors presented by the Missouri Honor Guard.
