Lawanda Burden, age 85, of Cape Girardeau, Mo, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014 at the family home in Cape Girardeau, MO. She was born on July 10, 1928 in Harrisburg, AR to the late Milton and Bessie Kilgo Aaron. She married Robert Donald Burden on June 4, 1949 in Hernando, MS and he preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 1991. Lawanda was retired owner and operator of Burden Grocery Store in Whitewater, MO. She attended the First Baptist Church of Delta for several years. She loved basketball and was one of the best players and received an invitation to play for the Memphis Redhead Women Basketball Team. Such an invitation was like being asked to play for what we call today the Women Harlem Globetrotters. She is survived by two sons, Donald (Brenda Brinker) Burden of Whitewater, MO, Russel Burden of Tuscaloosa, AL; two daughters, Patty Botkin of Oak Ridge, MO, Wendy (William) Way of Cape Girardeau, MO; eight grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. She was also preceded in death by one grandson, one brother and one sister. Friends may call after 4p.m., Friday, May 9, 2014 at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee, MO. Funeral service will be held at 1p.m., Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the chapel with Rev. Phil Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Proffer Cemetery in Crump, MO.
