Dee Messmer Opal C. "Dee" Messmer, 85 of Scott City, died Friday July 25, 2014 at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. She was born August 21, 1928 at Scott City, the daughter of Louis Charles and Mary Ada Brown Kalkbrinner. She married Cletus F. Messmer on June 20, 1953. Dee was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Scott City. She was also a member of V.F.W. Post 6407 Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Dee (Conley) Laster and Kay (David) Gilpin, both of Commerce; a sister Marje (Dale) Vinyard of Owensville, MO; 4 grandchildren, Melinda (Scott) Engelen, Beth (Branden) McCullough, Brian (Krissy) Gilpin and Amber (Robert) Gill; and five great grandchildren, Addison, Drew, Colin, Eli and Owen. She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister Friends may call Tuesday from 9 to 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City. Funeral mass will be celebrated by Rev. Oliver Clavin, at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel is in Charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
