Cletus F. Messmer, 91 of Scott City died Monday, August 10, 2015 at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He was born December 17, 1923 in Kelso, Missouri to Edward Valentine and Clara Martin Messmer. He married Opal C. "Dee" Kalkbrinner on June 20, 1953. She preceded him in death on July 25, 2014. He was an electrician. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Scott City, VFW Post 6407 in Scott City. He was a US army Veteran during World War II. Survivors include two daughters, Dee (Conley) Laster and Kay (David) Gilpin, both of Commerce, Missouri; four grandchildren, Melinda (Scott) Engelen, Beth (Branden) McCullough, Brian (Krissy) Gilpin and Amber (Robert) Gill; and five great-grandchildren, Addison, Drew, Colin, Eli and Owen He was also preceded in death by his parents; four brothers and three sisters. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City. Funeral mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Joe Weidenbenner at 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
